‘Extremely Unfortunate': Castle Craig in Meriden Heavily Vandalized

Castle Craig, which towers over Meriden from East Peak, became a target for vandals last night.

Meriden City Councilor Brian Daniels calls the graffiti on the more than 100 year old landmark, "extremely unfortunate."

Graffiti was spray painted on a historical marker, all over the stairway and on the stones at the top of the tower. Some of the markings contained obscenities.

“Children come up here. They don’t have to see swears and stuff like that. It’s horrible," Kathy Moutta of Meriden told NBC Connecticut.

The city is expected to work quickly to remove the graffiti.

Police are investigating and will try to figure who is responsible.

Regulars to the tower hope whoever is behind it realizes this was not a harmless prank and damaged one of the icons of this city.

“Why people have to mess things up? You know what I mean? Leave it alone," Moutta said.
