Several classrooms at Thomas Hooker School in Meriden have smoke damage after fire broke out Friday morning.
Deputy Chief Ryan Dunn, of the Meriden Fire Department, said crews received several calls as well as a municipal box alarm at 9:15a.m. reporting a fire on the second floor of the school.
“We found a fire in room 15, somewhere in the area of the ceiling. The fire was knocked down and contained,” he said.
The fire is under control, but there is smoke damage to the entire second floor, which includes 11 to 12 classrooms, and firefighters are going room to room.
“There will be some repairs that need to be made. We are metering the building as we go to make sure that it’s safe to continue working in the area without respirators,” Dunn said.
Teachers and staff who were at the school when the fire broke out evacuated and no injuries are reported.
It’s not clear how the fire started, but there was no sign of vandalism or anything else and it appears to be accidental.

The fire department is working with the board of education, which will figure out the extent of the damage and see how long it will take to make repairs.
