2 Dogs, 10 Puppies Killed in Canterbury Fire

Two dogs and 10 puppies have died after a large fire at a house in Canterbury on Thursday.

Flames were shooting out of the front of the home on Route 169, or North Canterbury Road, when firefighters arrived and crews were ordered out of the building. They were forced to attack the flames from outside.

The people who live in the house were not home when the fire started.

Paul Yellen, the fire marshal for the town of Canterbury, said the fire started in the basement and burned up and through the outside wall.

“Although the exact cause still not determined it was more probably than not a failure of an unspecified electrical circuit," Yellen said.

The house is located across the street from the Better Val-U Supermarket.

Firefighters responded from Canterbury, Lisbon, Plainfield, Scotland, Mortlake, Moosup, Central Village, Jewett City, Atwood Hose, Hampton and Danielson.

The American Red Cross was called in to assist the family.
