Jim Nelson said he was told the fire started in the garage.

"Within 10, 15 minutes, that house was engulfed in flames," Barbara Bottiglieri, of Southington, said. "And of course, our first concern was was there anyone in the house."

The residents, who neighbors said are a couple in their 60s, were able to get out on their own.

"Just very thankful that everybody’s OK," Bottiglieri said.

Not only did fire destroy the house at 1700 Mount Vernon Road, but it also buckled the vinyl siding on the house next door.

The fire was under control as of 1:20 a.m., according to the fire department, but the house is a total loss.

What caused the fire is not known. Officials are investigating.
