Fire House Squabble Causes Alarm

An internal rivalry at Ledyard's firehouse has spilled over into public view, but the mayor is confident the town will be protected from fire.

The worry in Ledyard is that some volunteers will ignore alarms, in protest of the suspension of an assistant fire chief.

The fire chief ordered him off firehouse property for "conduct unbecoming an officer" after an argument at a motorcycle crash last week.

"I think that, with the career firefighters and enough volunteers to respond, we're gonna be OK," Mayor Fred Allyn said. "If we find that that's not working, we'll have to look for some alternatives."

The chief and the suspended assistant chief are vying for the chief’s job at Ledyard's fire department in the next election.
