Fire Officials Fight Winsted Blaze

Fire officials are working to beat down a fire at 179 Danbury Quarter Road in the Winsted section of Winchester.

The road is closed near Route 44 as firefighters work to put out the flames. Fire officials said the large log-cabin home caught fire Wednesday night. Firefighters at the scene are working to put out lingering hot spots.

It's located at the end of a winding dirt driveway down a long, rural road. Since no fire hydrants are nearby, firefighter struggled with a lack of water and called in mutual aid from surrounding towns, according to fire officials at the scene.

Firefighters said the house is destroyed. The homeowner was outside at the time and tried to put out the fire himself with a garden house before calling 911, authorities said.

No one has been injured in the fire and firefighters rescued animals that were inside the house, fire officials said.

A next-door neighbor said she had never met the homeowner and that the house is for sale.
