At Least 4 Injured in Fire, Explosion in Middletown

NBC Universal, Inc.

At least four people have been injured and have been taken to the hospital after an explosion and fire at a home on Saybrook Road in Middletown Friday morning, according to officials.

Crews responded to the home just before 6:30 a.m .and found people outside, officials said.

Michael Howle, chief of the South Fire District, said he believes that family members who live down the road sprang into action before firefighters arrived to try to help those who were inside the home.

Officials at the scene initially said two elderly people were at the house, which is near Aircraft Road, and they were taken to Middlesex Hospital.

Officials later said they transported more than three people.

Two LifeStar medical transport helicopters were called but could not fly because of the weather.

Several departments responded and provided mutual aid.

The home is in a rural area, so getting water to the residence was a challenge.

The fire marshal will be investigating.
