Firefighters Pull Submerged Car from Hamden Lake

Hamden firefighters pulled a submerged car from a lake in Hamden on Sunday evening after the car jumped the guardrail and safety fence.

Police responded to Waite Street, west of Whitney Avenue, at 8:22 p.m. and found a car had jumped the guardrail and safety fence and landed in Lake Whitney, police said.

A man who was in the car got himself out, climbed the steep bank and was suffering from minor injuries when he met firefighters on the road, but the Nissan Maxima was submerged.

The driver was transported to the hospital to be evaluated.

Firefighters Matthew Kellick and Shane Schaffer got into cold water protective suits for the search and got into the 40-degree water.

The Hamden Police Department is investigating.
