FIRST ALERT: Some Schools to Dismiss Early as Heat Index Approaches 100 Degrees

An excessive heat warning has been issued for Hartford County through Wednesday night and there is a heat advisory for the rest of the state, which prompted some school districts to dismiss students early for the second day in a row.

NBC Connecticut's meteorologists issued a First Alert for intense heat on Tuesday and Wednesday as students begin returning to school across the state. 

The heat index is approaching 100 degrees, just as students in many parts of the state return to school.

FIRST ALERT: Timing Out the Excessive Heat

The humidity rose to oppressive levels, and combined with temperatures in the mid-90s, is making for a very uncomfortable couple of days. 

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection issued a warning that ozone levels across Southern Connecticut could be unhealthy for sensitive groups through Wednesday.

The Milford, Naugatuck and West Haven school districts announced early dismissals Tuesday and Naugatuck and Norwalk have announced an early dismissal for Wednesday.
