Former Patriot on Trial in Millionaire Slaying

Eric Naposki is accused of killing a California millionaire.

A trial is set to begin for a former NFL player and his ex-lover, who are accused of killing a wealthy Southern California businessman nearly 18 years ago.

Former New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts linebacker Eric Naposki, of Greenwich, Connecticut, and his former girlfriend, Nanette Packard, were charged with murder in the 1994 shooting of multimillionaire William Francis McLaughlin.

The trial begins on Monday, the Orange County District Attorney's office said.

Prosecutors say Packard -- who had dated McLaughlin -- stood to collect $1 million in life insurance from his death and she convinced Naposki to shoot McLaughlin at his Newport Beach home, prosecutors said.

The web site Defend a Friend - Eric Naposki, includes letters from Naposki in which he proclaims his innocence.

The Orange County Register reports that producers from the TV shows "Dateline NBC" and "48 Hours" have been attending earlier proceedings to prepare for true-crime documentaries.
