Over 80 Guns Collected at Guilford Gun Buyback Event in Honor of Ethan Song

Guilford Police Department collected over 80 guns at a gun buyback event on Saturday in honor of Ethan Song, a 15-year-old who shot himself with a handgun owned by a friend's father in January 2018.

During the event, which took place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the police department on Church Street, 83 guns were turned in. Police said the 83 guns included 46 handguns, 31 rifles, three Derringer-type guns and three assault weapons.

Anyone who turned in a gun was given a gift card ranging from $25 to $200 depending on the type of weapon.

In an effort to promote safe and responsible gun storage, the Yale-New Haven Hospital Injury Prevention Program provided safe gun storage information pamphlets. Free gun locks and gun storage safes were also given out to anyone interested in safe storage options for their guns.

Officials distributed nine small safes, 18 large safes and 15 gun locks at the event, police said.

Residents are reminded that they can turn in unwanted weapons for destruction to the Guilford Police Department at any time.
