As scientists work to come up with a way to clean up the millions of gallons of oil that spilled into the Gulf of Mexico, hair salons across the country are chipping in to help.
Shear’s Hair Gallery in Waterbury has joined with 90,000 hair salons across the country that is donating hair to the cause.
Hair naturally attracts oil and can be used to soak it up. Matter of Trust is a San Francisco-based not for profit that started the “Hair Clippings for Oil Spills” program. So far, they have collected 400,000 pounds of hair.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to help with out environment and to help with the oil spill,”” Shear’s owner, Pam Testa, said.
The hair clippings are swept up and put into boxes that are then shipped to Matter of Trust. So far, Shear’s has collected several boxes worth.
“I think it’s a wonderful thing to do to step up to the plate,” said customer Debbie Migliaro who didn’t know she was donating to charity before walking into the salon.
