Man With Famous Mugshot Pleads Not Guilty

He stopped the hair braiding to stab a man, police said.

New Haven man whose mugshot made him known worldwide pleaded not guilty to assault charges on Tuesday.

As you can see above, the mugshot of David Davis, 21 of New Haven, shows him with half his hair sticking up.

After appearing in court this week, he told the Stamford Advocate he was "shocked" by all the attention his photo and story received.

"It was everywhere," he said. "It was on Oprah and all over Twitter."

The reason for the unusual photo, according to police, is that Davis was sitting inside an apartment on Henry Street in Stamford's south end, getting his hair braided earlier this month, when a 21-year-old Stamford man he had been arguing with approached him.

Davis thought the other person was going to hurt him, so he picked up a pair of scissors and slashed the other in the back, police said.

Davis appeared in court on Tuesday and said he acted in self defense, the Stamford Advocate reports.

The victim was treated at Stamford Hospital for the stab wound.
