Hamden Police Officer Hit by Car While Directing Traffic

A Hamden police officer is recovering after being hit by a car while directing traffic Friday afternoon.

Police said the officer, who was not publicly identified, was directing traffic at the intersection of Mix Avenue and Benham Street around 3:30 p.m. when he was hit by a car driven by a 79-year-old Woodbridge resident.

The officer was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital with a concussion and back and neck injuries, according to police.

No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Officer Stephen DeGrand at 203-230-4036.

Police remind drivers of the following safety tips when someone is directing traffic.

  • Reduce speed to a reasonable level, below the posted speed limit.
  • Move over a lane, unless such movement would be considered unsafe.
  • If uncertain how to proceed, wait inside your vehicle until the officer approaches you.
