Pregnant Woman and Teen Killed in Crash in Shelton

A pregnant 23-year-old Bridgeport woman, the baby she was carrying, and an 18-year-old West Haven woman were killed in a crash in Shelton on Sunday night, according to police.

Police said a Mini Cooper going south on River Road crashed into a Saturn that was going north on River Road at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Two passengers in the Mini Cooper, Shalymar Herrera, 18, of West Haven, and 23-year-old Briana Torres-Carter, of Bridgeport, were pronounced dead.

Torres-Carter was pregnant, according to police. Her father-in-law said she was eight months along in the pregnancy and the baby shower was held Saturday.

Her husband, 19-year-old Lawrence Carter Jr. was driving the Mini Cooper, police said. He is in critical condition.

Another 19-year-old Bridgeport resident who was in the car is in the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Carter's father said the group in the Mini Cooper had been out playing laser tag before a friend in the Air Force was deployed to Germany.

The 25-year-old woman who was driving the Saturn and two passengers who were in the Saturn, a 22-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man were also injured and taken to the hospital. All three are from Pennsylvania and their injuries are not life-threatening,
