Hartford City Hall and the governor's residence have raised the Haitian flag in solidarity after President Donald Trump reportedly referred to the country and others as "s--tholes."
"The United States is a nation of immigrants who originate from countries throughout the world," Governor Dannel Malloy said in a statement. "We should celebrate this diversity, not denigrate and shame it."
Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin posted a photo on Twitter of the Haitian flag at city hall on Friday.
"Hartford is the proud home of a large and strong West Indian community — and we’re proud to fly the Haitian flag on City Hall today," Bronin wrote.
Trump on Friday denied using certain "language" as fury spread inside and outside the United States over his comments about immigration during a private meeting with lawmakers. But neither he nor the White House denied the most controversial of his comments: using the word "s--thole" to describe countries in Africa and saying he would prefer immigrants from countries like Norway instead.
Senate Republican President Pro Tempore Len Fasano says the president's comments were "beyond inappropriate and offensive" and "fly in the face of what it means to be Republican and an American."

Fasano, who declined to be a Trump delegate, called on Trump to "apologize for these disrespectful and outrageous comments."
