Photos Show What Happened After Police Sergeant Accidentally Fires Gun

Authorities are conducting an internal investigation after an off-duty police sergeant accidentally fired his personal handgun into his neighbor's house.

Windsor Police said off-duty Hartford Police Sgt. Eric Smith accidentally fired the bullet from inside his bedroom next door. The bullet landed on a girl's bed in Windsor.

Smith told police he "was unloading his off duty handgun" in his upstairs bedroom when he "accidentally fired the gun one time." He told investigations that he "didn't think the bullet exited his bedroom wall."

According to the police report, Sgt. Smith wasn't the first one to report the accidental firing to police. It was the neighbors who found the bullet in the girl's bed.

Smith has not been charged by Windsor Police but there is an internal investigation underway by his own department.

"The investigation is almost complete," said Lt. Brian Foley. "It's in the command review process."

The Hartford Police Union president wouldn't comment on the investigation.

"The incident is being handled internally and we decline to comment until we have an opportunity to review the investigation and speak with the sergeant," said Sgt. Rich Holton.

Hartford Police did say Sgt. Smith was off duty and wasn't using his department weapon.

Smith was not available for comment on Thursday.
