Teacher in Toilet Cleaning Investigation Gets Warning

Catherine Saur had students clean toilets.

A Hartford city teacher who had students clean toilets by hand has received a verbal warning from the school district, the Hartford Courant reports.

The investigation began in May when the parent of a student in Catherine Saur's class complained that her son suffered an allergic reaction because he was instructed to clean the bathroom in the art teacher's room at Kennelly School.

The student's mother filed a complaint with the school and an emergency parent-teacher organization meeting was held.

The Courant reports that a letter from the district's labor and legal department said that an investigation determined that Saur "engaged in inappropriate conduct" and that student may not be required to clean bathrooms.

The Courant reports that the investigation revealed that Saur noticed liquid on the toilet seat after the student used it, sprayed the seat with Fantastic cleaner and she told the student to wipe down the seat.
