Connecticut drivers headed to Rhode Island could soon be paying tolls to cross the state line.
Rhode Island lawmakers have asked the Federal Highway Commission to approve a toll on I-95 just across the border from Connecticut. Drivers would have to pay going into and coming out of Rhode Island.
"It's just another tax. That's what it comes down to. It's just another way to get more money out of the taxpayer," Gary Case, of Rhode Island, said.
Others say the economy has forced states to look for different revenue streams.
"I can understand why they're doing it," said Andrew Fierlit, of North Haven. "We have family that live in Rhode Island and it's kind of hard times."
There are concerns tolls would create more traffic as well. "It will create a traffic nightmare," Case said. People will seek alternate routes to get off the highway."
There is no time frame for a decision from the Highway Commission.
