Help for Housatonic Flooding

Lawmakers to discuss proactive measures with local leaders

State leaders are trying to get help for people who live along the Housatonic River.

Lawmakers on Friday will meet with mayors and first selectmen from communities plagued by flooding since Tropical Storm Irene hit in August. Towns including Newtown, Bridgewater, North Canaan, Cornwall, Derby, Seymour, Southbury, Oxford, New Milford, Brookfield and Monroe will be represented.

This week, Congressman Chris Murphy announced the RELIEF Act, legislation that would create a grant program for town governments to address flood mitigation projects.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro have also called for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to review the Lower Housatonic flood plan in response to the flooding last March.
