Horse Sculptures Need Help

We aren't horsing around.  West Hartford needs you.

Three bronze horse sculptures outside town hall will soon gallop off into the sunset unless a benefactor steps forward.

Roxanne Stachelek, director of the West Hartford Art League, tells the Hartford Courant that they are launching a campaign to find buyers for the three works.  Each is being sold for $42,000 by artist Karen Petersen.

"These works are part of an art in public places collection. They were on loan for a year and that time is up next month. They are beautiful pieces that add a lot to the town. We hope benefactors will come along to purchase them and donate them to the town so they can stay right where they are," Stachelek said.

The loan period ends in late September and the artist says she needs to reclaim the pieces and offer them for sale to earn money.

In better economic times, Town Manager Ronald Van Winkle says the town might have considered some financial role in keeping the works.

The horses are among 10 pieces of public art on display in West Hartford. Several are on loan but are here for another year.
