House Guest Stole Host's Car: Police

Police arrested a man who is accused of stealing a car from the South Windsor home he was staying at and giving it to another man in exchange for either drugs or money, police said.

A woman called police on Saturday to report that she suspected Andre Baena, 20, of Suffield, stole her 2011 Cadillac STS from her garage, according to a news release from the South Windsor Police Department.

Police used OnStar to track down the car in Hartford and the man driving it said he bought it from a man matching Baena's description for $3,000, according to police. The title to the car was in the vehicle, police said.

When police interviewed Baena, he said he loaned the car to the man in Hartford in exchange for drugs. He confessed that he saw the car keys at the woman's home, where he was a house guest, police said.

Police arrested Baena and returned the car to the woman.

Baena faced charges of second-degree larceny and burglary.

Police held him in custody on a $5,000 surety bond and he is scheduled to appear in Manchester Superior Court on Monday.
