People across the world are in disbelief after the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown on Friday and many are wondering what they can do to help.

United Way

The United Way has set up the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.

“United Way extends our most sincere condolences and prayers to all those families affected by the devastating events in Newtown/Sandy Hook, Connecticut. While the eyes of the world may be on Newtown/Sandy Hook, to several staff, volunteers and contributors, Newtown is home. We will stand with the community and everyone affected directly and indirectly by this tragic event as we face the days and weeks ahead,” the United Way of Western Connecticut’s Web site says.

Newtown Youth and Family

Any donations made to Newtown Youth and Family will be donated directly to those effected by the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.  Donations can be sent directly to Newtown Youth and Family Services via Caroline's Gift at the link here. Donations made for the next month will go to the victims.

Snowflakes for Sandy Hook

The Connecticut PTSA is asking people to make paper snowflakes to help create a winter wonderland for students to return to in their new school.  Send the snowflakes to the Connecticut PTSA, 60 Connolly Parkway, Building 12, Suite 103, Hamden, CT 06514.

Fundraiser in Monroe

A fundraiser will be held at Roberto's Restaurant in Monroe. It starts at 6 p.m.

Toy Drive

A toy drive to benefit Sandy Hook students is being organized in Monroe. A reception to be held at Roberto's Restaurant, at 505 Main St. Monroe, at 6 p.m. on Dec. 22, including free food. Monetary donations for Sandy Hook Elementary School as well as toys for grades K-4 will be appreciated. There will also be a list for anyone willing to offer further support services for those affected. Everyone is welcome.

In addition, there will be donation centers set up in some areas at a time to be announced. Please to do not wrap your presents as they will be inspected before distribution.

Gift Collection

Healing Hearts is a community effort to collect gifts for the children of this grief stricken community.  They will collect tokens of love and support for the children at locations in East Hartford, Hartford and Sandy Hook until Saturday, Dec. 23.  The gifts will be delivered Monday, Dec. 24.

The Newtown Memorial Fund is raising funds for expenses for police duty overtime and other community financial needs that arise,  to assist the town with the design, placement and funding to donate a suitable lasting memorial for the community in tribute to those we lost and to provide an annual scholarship fund to help students of the Newtown Public Schools who will be going on to college.

Concert for Newtown

New Haven area musicians are getting together in a benefit concert on Thursday, Dec. 20 to raise funds to help rebuild after the tragedy.  Neighborhood Music School has offered to host the event in their recital hall. The concert begins at 8:15 p.m.  Performers include:

The suggested donation is $10 or up. All donations will go directly to the Sandy Hook School Support Fund. If you can't attend the show, but would like to give, you can do so at https://newtown.uwwesternct.org/.

Waterbury Charity Basketball Game

A basketball game will be held at the YMCA in Waterbury at 6 p.m. on Dec. 26 to raise money for the families affected. Donation of $5 requested. Bring photo identification. Anyone who makes a donation will receive a ribbon pin. After the game, there will be a candlelighting in remembrance of the victims.  

Friends of the Engel Family Fund

The Friends of the Engel Family Fund has been set up in memory of Olivia Engel.

James R. Mattioli Memorial Fund

Chase Kowalksi Scholarship Fund

Ana Grace Marquez-Greene Music Scholarship Fund

The fund was established to pay tribute to Ana's love of music. The scholarship will assist others who want to pursue a music education at Western Connecticut State University.  Ana's father is an assistant professor of music at WCSU.  You can donate to the fund, care of Western Connecticut State University, Office of Institutional Advancement, 181 White Street, Danbury, CT 06810, or donate online here.

There is a national effort to collect teddy bears to go to grieving students in Newtown and the Hersam Acorn and the Fairfield Sun will be taking donations.

You can drop off bears at Hersam Acorn’s office, 1000 Bridgeport Ave., second floor in Shelton starting Monday, Dec. 17.

Lake Compounce

Lake Compounce will donate a portion of each and every Holiday Lights paid adult admission this weekend to the Sandy Hook School Support Fund through the United Way of Western Connecticut.
