Husky Dragged By Pickup

A Husky puppy has sore paws and hind legs, but is recovering after the terrifying ordeal of being dragged by a pickup.

Police stopped William Myrick, 76, of Branford after a volunteer firefighter called around 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

The firefighter was parked at South Montowese Street and Indian Neck Avenue and saw the dog on a long leash being dragged, police said.

As the truck picked up speed, the 1-year-old Husky was dragged for about a tenth of a mile before the leash broke free, police said.

Myrick told police he walked the family dog and tied it to his truck while he did other tasks. Then, he received a phone call from a family member for help and drove away with the dog still tied to the truck.

The dog was taken to the Branford Veterinary Hospital, where it was treated for minor abrasions to its paws and hind legs.

Myrick was charged with cruelty to animals. He is scheduled to appear in New Haven court on Jan. 18.

Police said he was charged because he is accused of tying the dog to the car.
