Freezing Rain Advisory Lifted After Icy Morning

A freezing rain advisory was been issued for the majority of the state this morning, causing slick road conditions and several closures this morning.

The advisory was initially posted until 9 a.m. but was extended until 11 a.m. and covered most of the central and eastern parts of the state, as well as parts of southern Connecticut.

While temperatures have begun to warm up throughout the morning, the icy spots will continue to cause problems over the next one-to-two hours.

Sunday morning, state police requested the assistance of the Department of Transportation, shutting down highways until they could be treated.

Much of I-91 in the Hartford area was "a sheet of ice" Sunday morning. The flyover connecting I-91 in Wethersfield to I-84 in Hartford was shut down while police waited for DOT crews to arrive.

Route 2 westbound in Glastonbury was also closed after multiple spin-outs but reopened just before 9 a.m. Police said a car slammed into a state police cruiser that had stopped on the side of the road to assist a stuck driver. No major injuries were reported.

State police have reported a number of spin-outs on Route 9 south near the Haddam/Middletown line. The highway was not closed, but traffic was at a dead stop around 7 a.m. Sunday.

Police asked drivers to stay off the roadways Sunday morning. Many major highways have been treated as of 9 a.m. but drivers should continue to proceed with caution.
