Olcott Street in Manchester was closed between Love Lane and Falknor Drive for hours Tuesday while authorities tried to negotiate with the man.

Officers originally responded to the home Monday around 6 p.m. after getting a report of a man shouting and using profanity outside. The man was seen on the patio of the home yelling and pacing in what police said was a visibly agitated state.

According to authorities, the situation escalated when the man went indoors and came back outside with a machete while ordering the police to leave. He then began swinging the machete.

The man went back into the home, broke a window, and threatened officers at the scene. After several hours, officers pulled back, but stayed in contact with the man's family to ensure his welfare.

Mental health professionals visited the man's home early Tuesday, but police said the visit took a dangerous turn when he became agitated and brandished the machete again.

After that, a police SWAT team returned to the scene Tuesday and used a bullhorn to try and communicate with the man and have him come out of the home peacefully.

An arrest warrant was obtained for the man after what happened Monday night, and he was given the opportunity to peacefully surrender, but he didn't. Then, the Capitol Region Emergency Services Team was called in to help take him into custody.

Police said he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and remains in custody.

He faces charges including breach of peace, threatening and criminal attempt at assault of a police officer.

"The Manchester Police Department emphasizes its commitment to the safety and well-being of the community, including individuals experiencing mental health crises. The collaboration between law enforcement and mental health professionals in these situations is essential to ensure a peaceful resolution while providing the necessary support for those in need," the police department said in a statement.
