Police Release Name of Jet Skier Killed in Griswold

The body of a 31-year-old jet skier was found in the waters of Jewett City on Wednesday morning after an overnight search for him.

Police released the man’s name just aftter 5 p.m. and said the victim is James Avila,of Griswold.

He had been out on the jet ski when he apparently hit the shore of an island on the side of Asland Pond, in the Jewett City section of Griswold, around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, State Department of Environmental Protection officials said.

A friend called authorities after hearing the jet ski engine cut out and seeing no sign of his friend.

State Department of Environmental Protection Conservation Police and the State Police dive teams searched, with help from several local fire and emergency response departments. They found the man’s body at around 6 a.m.
