The state's second-highest court has overturned the murder conviction of a man sentenced to 60 years in prison for a 2008 killing outside a New Haven nightclub.
The Appellate Court on Monday ordered a new trial for 26-year-old Billy Ray Wright, saying New Haven Superior Court Judge Brian Fischer improperly restricted the defense's cross-examining of police at Wright's trial.
Prosecutors are considering an appeal to the state Supreme Court.
A jury in 2011 convicted Wright of murdering 29-year-old Ronald Bethea outside the Cardinal's Club.
Police and prosecutors said surveillance video showed Wright shooting Bethea from behind, and Fischer called it a "cold-blooded execution."
Wright said he was innocent and denied that he was shooter seen on the video. He's expected to remain in prison pending an appeal or new trial.
