Lamont Modifies Bill to Encourage More School Cooperation

Gov. Ned Lamont is modifying his contentious plan to encourage local school districts to consolidate and cooperate more with one another.

The Democrat says he submitted a revised bill on Wednesday, noting he agrees with many constituents who do not want their school districts to be forced to consolidate operations. Lamont says he hopes his modifications address those concerns.

Lamont's revised bill creates a Commission on Shared School Services that will develop recommendations for sharing school services within and among school districts, as well as other recommendations. Under his original bill, the commission would have developed a plan for redistricting and consolidation.

The two top Senate Democrats had offered more contentious proposals aimed at encouraging more regional school districts, prompting strong opposition. But those have not been acted upon.
