Driver in Critical Condition After Crash on I-84 in Tolland

A truck driver is in critical condition after a crash on Interstate 84 West in Tolland this morning.

The Thurston Foods tractor-trailer rolled over a jersey barrier on Interstate 84 East between exits 69 and 70, officials said.

The driver was trapped and had to be extricated.

Public safety officials said they called for Lifestar, but the medical transport helicopter could not fly because of weather.

The driver is in critical, but stable condition at Saint Francis Hospital according to local officials.

Willington #1 Fire Department, Town of Manchester Fire Department, ASM and an off-duty West Hartford firefighter provided mutual aid.

There are lane closures on Interstate 84 West in Tolland due to the crash. Only the right lane is open.

Crews said the cleanup from the crash will be extensive because of a diesel and oil spill and food from trailer.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is at the scene, as are Connecticut State Police and the state Department of Transportation.

A hazmat cleanup company is also responding.

Whether the crash is weather-related is not known.
