Connecticut lawmakers are back in Hartford for a new session of the General Assembly that promises to focus on a sizeable budget deficit and a legislative response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings.
Both the House of Representatives and Senate convened shortly after 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Members were scheduled to take the oath of office and pass their rules.
Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is scheduled to address a joint session of the Legislature around noon to deliver his State of the State address. He is expected to discuss challenges the state has faced, including the shooting.
Gun control, mental health care and school safety are expected to be major topics. Legislators also face a projected deficit of about $1.2 billion in next year's $20 billion budget.
