Lendl Lends His Hands and Heart to Youth

Camp for disabled young athletes runs all week in West Hartford

Tennis legend Ivan Lendl gives back each summer in Connecticut and he offers children with disabilities the chance to be athletes in an environment in which they can be comfortable.

The Connecticut resident will visit with campers Thursday at New Britain's Hospital for Special Care 19th annual sports camp at St. Joseph College in West Hartford.

The camp, the Ivan Lendl Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp, was founded in 1989 and is offered every year.

It gives children and youths the chance to play tennis, basketball and soccer, swim and run track and field.

The camp, the only one of its kind in New England, is free for children, 7 to 18, who have physical disabilities.

The three-time U.S. Open Tennis Champion and eight-time Grand Slam Champion has hosted the camp in conjunction with the hospital for several years.

All the coaches have experience working with athletes with disabilities.
