Lessons from a Former Basketball Star and Drug Addict

Former addict and NBA player to share his story in New Britain.

If you're a fan of New England basketball, you might have heard the story of Chris Herren.

He was born in Fall River, Massachusetts and quickly became one of the city's brightest stars at Durfee High School, a team chronicled in the book, "Fall River Dreams."

He then became a standout at Fresno State and was drafted by the NBA, eventually playing for his home team, the Boston Celtics.

But all of Herren's basketball success masked a much darker side, filled with substance abuse.

He started with alcohol, but quickly moved to cocaine, heroin and prescription drugs.  Herren finally hit bottom when he was found unconscious in his car with a heroin needle in his arm.

After years of rehab, Chris has now been sober since 2008.  He now spends his time sharing his story with people across the country.  He's also written a book called "Basketball Junkie: A Memoir.”  His story was also documented in the ESPN documentary "Unguarded."

Tonight, he's bringing his message to New Britain.

Herren will take part in a drug awareness program at New Britain High School.  The program, titled "From the Top to the Bottom and Back Again" is being offered to young athletes in New Britain, Nutmeg State Games athletes and the general public.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. in the school's auditorium.  Seating is limited, and you must register online.
