Letter Carrier Facing New Mail Theft Charges

A mail carrier has been arrested for a second time, charged with stealing gift cards from North Branford residents' mail.

Police arrested Melissa Cruz, 31, of Wallingford, Tuesday.

She was originally arrested in August, when investigators tracked specific gift cards sent through the mail facility where Cruz worked. Authorities began their investigation after receiving complaints from residents, police said.

When police arrested Cruz in August, the found an additional 30 gift cards in vehicle. They filed the new charges against Cruz after verifying those gift cards were in fact stolen, according to police.

Cruz is facing 30 counts of sixth-degree larceny. She was released after posting a $15,000 bond and will be in court Sept. 20.
