Light Sentence for Student Who Caused CCSU Lockdown

A Connecticut judge has approved accelerated rehabilitation for a former Central Connecticut State University student who triggered a campus lockdown and massive police response.

The rehabilitation program approved in New Britain Superior Court on Monday for David Kyem is for first-time offenders and can result in charges being dismissed after a probation period.

Kyem pleaded not guilty in February to misdemeanor charges, including breach of peace. He caused a furor by wearing a Halloween costume with a sword and BB gun last Nov. 4.

Officials locked down the school for three hours and police SWAT teams responded.

Police said Kyem told them he went to Halloween parties and wore the costume while returning to the campus because he didn't want to carry it and all its accessories.
