Limbaugh Digs into Diaper Day

It's Diaper Awareness Day in Connecticut.

Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh is again taking on a federal proposal to offer free diapers in day cares and Gov. Dannel Malloy proclaiming Thursday as "Diaper Needs Awareness Day" in Connecticut.

On his show Wednesday, he said it was "Day Three of this diaper business."

He's referring, in part, to U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro's economic recovery bill that would have the federal government distributing free diapers through daycare centers. Limbaugh criticized the legislation on his show last week and now he's taking on Malloy's "Diaper Day."

Malloy declared Thursday as "Diaper Needs Awareness Day" in Connecticut, recognizing that some families can't afford them. A forum is scheduled for Thursday night at Foundry Square in New Haven, where a group of policy specialists and community advocates will gather to examine the bottom line of diaper affordability.

"How long is it going to be before a bunch of geezers in nursing homes are gonna be demanding free diapers?" Limbaugh said. "Can you imagine this panel discussion? Will this be on C-SPAN? Who will the experts be? Can you imagine watching a panel discussion on the health risks for babies whose diapers are not changed frequently enough?"

The Diaper Bank is coordinating Thursday's forum. The organization distributes diapers to poor Connecticut families through social service agencies and aid groups.

Advocates say receiving affordable diapers is critical for poor families who need a steady supply for daycare so they can work or finish school, or who might otherwise keep wet diapers on their children longer than advised because they can't afford replacements.
