A man visiting a Torrington mental health clinic for an emergency medical evaluation got so angry with a receptionist that he tried to strangle her with his belt, police said.

A police report says Dan Woodward, 62, of Litchfield, was having a “seemingly innocuous” conversation with the victim and became "out of control."

A nurse at the clinic stopped the assault, authorities said. The receptionist, who wasn't named, was treated at a hospital and released.

Police charged Woodward with strangulation, assault and unlawful restraint after Monday morning's incident at the Northwest Mental Health Authority clinic.

Woodward was brought to the hospital for an emergency medical evaluation and released to police.

He is being held in lieu of $5,000 bail. It's not clear if he has a lawyer.
