A man is dead and two people are in custody after a hit-and-run crash involving a motorized scooter and a car in Hartford, Connecticut Thursday.
Police said the scooter driven by 57-year-old Rudy Cabrera was hit by a car near 98 Wethersfield Ave. around 2:50 p.m. He suffered serious injuries and was transported to Hartford Hospital, where he died around 15 minutes later.
Witnesses described the vehicle that fled the scene and police found it after it crashed at Stonington Street and Wethersfield Avenue. The people in the car were gone, but officers found them several blocks away, police said.
Police said they believe the evading driver was going north on Wethersfield Avenue, approaching Morris Street, and traveled in the left-turn only lane through a red light at a high rate of speed and collided with the scooter that Cabrera was on.
Irving Gonzalez, 19, was charged with misconduct with a motor vehicle; evading responsibility, resulting in death; operating a motor vehicle without a license; failure to obey traffic control signal, and failure to drive in a proper lane.
Bond was set at $150,000.
Hartford police are also investigating a serious motorcycle crash at Francis Avenue and Hamilton Street. The motorcyclist was listed in serious condition, police said.
