Man Drove at Children Over Skateboard Dispute: Cops

A New Britain man accused of driving at children in an elementary school football field was arrested on Wednesday and police said it was over the sale of a skateboard.

According to New Britain police, two juveniles got into a fight at Smith Elementary School after one sold a skateboard to the other and the buyer tried to return it.

After the juvenile who was trying to return went home, his mother and her boyfriend, 53-year-old Herberto Lugo, went to Smith School and Lugo drove over the football field, where several youths were practicing, according to police.

They said he continued for more than 100 yards toward the child who sold the skateboard and his brother and stopped within three feet of hitting the children.

Lugo was charged with two counts of criminal attempt to commit assault in the second degree with a motor vehicle, reckless endangerment in the first degree and reckless driving.

Bond was set at $75,000, but the bail commissioner released Lugo on a written promise to appear.
