Westport police have arrested a Bridgeport man who is accused of embezzling more than $40,000 from the Westport Little League.
The little league organization called police in March after the annual internal audit revealed that more than $40,000 in cash and equipment were unaccounted for, police said.
Police said that their investigation traced back to one person: Kevin Hlavac, 39, who had the authority to order equipment and submit expense reports to be reimbursed.
As police interviewed him, Hlavac eventually admitted to falsifying invoices and cancelling equipment orders after he’d submitted invoices so the league would pay him for items that were never delivered, police said.
He also admitted to billing the league for clinics that were never held, according to police.
The alleged embezzlement also affected players’ parents. Hlavac admitted that he had parents pay for hotel rooms as well as expenses for out-of-town games and would not reimburse them, but then submitted invoices and received reimbursement from the league, police said.
He also admitted to selling league merchandise and keeping the money, according to police.
Hlavac was charged with first-degree larceny. Bond was set at $5,000.
He is due in court on June 5.
It is not clear if he has an attorney, and the phone number listed for Hlavac was not in service.
