Man Damages Cop Motorcycle, Smashes Whole Foods Glass Door: Police

A man allegedly knocked over a West Hartford police motorcycle and pushed a shopping cart through the glass door at Whole Foods to invoke a response from police, officials said.

On Friday, police said Jared Schlar, 31, called 911 multiple times to report "illegal activity," damaged a police officer's motorcycle and pushed a shopping cart through the front doors at the grocery store on Raymond Road.

At 2:30 a.m., officers responding to a report at Fernridge Park were approached by Schlar who was videotaping the scene before leaving the area, West Hartford Police said.

Schlar called 911 at 2:42 a.m., identifying himself as "Jared Schlar with Web Marketing LLC", to report "illegal activity" performed at "Fern Park" and asked the dispatcher whether the station has gotten "redundancy," according to police. Police said the line went down for 25 seconds and they made three attempts to raise the caller before the call was terminate.

Two minutes later, Shlar called 911 again, claiming he had been hung up on, police said.

"We have redundancy, so surrender now!" Shlar allegedly said, according to West Hartford police.

After the second call, Schlar appears to go to his own Twitter account and posts messages like "#f---thepolice," police said.

At 3:45 a.m., officers discovered that a West Hartford Police Department motorcycle had been knocked over and damaged at the station parking lot. Video surveillance shows a person, who they say is Schlar, standing near the motorcycle.

A West Hartford Streets employee called police at 4:46 a.m. to report vandalism in the West Hartford Center area. Police found Schlar sitting in the middle of Farmington Avenue, where he told them, "I was waiting for you," according to police.

Schlar resisted arrest and subsequently injured an officer while being brought into custody, police said. The officer sustained a minor shoulder strain, St. Mike Alquist with the West Hartford Police Department said.

After the incident, police received a call from the supervisor of Whole Foods on Raymond Road about a man pushing a shopping cart through the front glass doors and smashing two watermelons, cops said.

Surveillance video purportedly shows Schlar vandalizing the store at around 3:18 a.m., prior to damaging the officer's motorcycle, police said.

Schlar is accused of interfering with an officer, assault on a peace officer, breach of peace, reckless use of highway by pedestrian, two counts of first-degree criminal mischief, two counts of second-degree criminal mischief and three counts of refusal to be fingerprinted.

His bond was set at $100,000.

The incident is still under investigation.
