Man Shoots Himself in Leg While Dancing at Fourth of July Picnic: Police

A Bridgeport man accidentally shot himself in the leg while dancing at a Fourth of July picnic on Sunday, according to police, and to add insult to injury, he is now facing criminal charges.

Police said 32-year-old Kiel Helenese's gun fell out of the holster and he was negligent when he went to reholster the gun and it went off.

The Connecticut Post reports that Helenese was holding a bloody rag on his right leg when officers arrived and he said he'd been dancing with some friends at a holiday party when a pistol on his right hip went off.

Helenese was treated at the hospital.

He was also charged with possession of a loaded gun while under the influence of alcohol, unlawful discharge of a firearm and first-degree reckless endangerment. He is free on $1,000 bond. He could not immediately be reached.

He is due in Bridgeport Superior Court on July 14.
