Man Tries Eluding Police by Jumping in Willimantic River: Police

A man tried to elude police officers during a foot chase by jumping into the Willimantic River on Friday, police said. 

Willimantic Police said when they attempted to apprehend Jose Sanchez, 28, for allegedly assaulting a detective, he led the officers on a foot pursuit. 

The foot chase covered more than 300 yards across Recreation Park before Sanchez jumps into the River, police said. 

One detective and two patrol officers were able to apprehend Sanchez, who was about 30 yards from the shoreline in 4 feet deep waters, according to Willimantic Police. 

The narcotics detective was not injured. 

Sanchez was charged with interfering with police, assault on a police officer and tampering with evidence. His bond was set at $25,000.
