Police in Hartford said a mother went too far in an effort to help her son protect himself from bullies.
Sylvia Mojica, 38, was arrested on Friday, accused of giving her son a BB gun and a folding knife to keep in his backpack, police said.
She was concerned that her son, a student at Burns Elementary School, being bullied by bigger children, according to school officials.
The boy, 12, approached a school employee and said he had the weapons. He's been suspended for 10 days and the school has recommended him for expulsion, Hartford Schools spokesperson David Medina said. He was also referred to juvenile authorities.
Medina said the alleged bullying happened the night before the child brought the weapons to school. It did not happen on school grounds and the students accused in the attacks did not go to the school, he said.
Mojica is charged with risk of injury to a minor.
Police notified the Department of Children and Families about the incident.
