Thousands Without Power

 A strong storm caused problems up and down the East Coast, including in Connecticut, where Connecticut Light & Power has opened its emergency operations center in Berlin and thousands of customers are without power. 

Strong winds have knocked down trees and powerlines in parts of southwestern Connecticut in towns including Danbury and Ridgefield. In West Hartford, crews are responding to calls about trees falling onto houses on Banbury Lane and Grennan Road. In Southington, there were power outages in the southwest part of town.

In Rocky Hill a piece of a huge old pine tree came crashing down on the roof of Bill Walthman's Meadow Road home.  "As I was talking, that tree crashed onto the roof of the house," said Waltham.  He said he was talking about selling the home at the time.

Residents also reported objects flying by them, including trash cans.

As of 5 p.m., more than 22,000 customers of CL&P had no power and United Illuminating reported more than 3,000 customers in the dark.   As of 11 p.m. CL&P said that number was down to just over 9,000, U.I. reported just over 100 outages.

Amtrak service was suspended into and out of New York Penn Station due to wire damage in New York and New Jersey, but had resumed as of 2:40 p.m. Delays continue into the evening.

Several flights were diverted to Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks following massive delays and groundstops at Newark, LaGuardia due to the strong winds and heavy rain.

In Connecticut, wind gusts reached nearly 60 mph as the line of heavy rain and rumbled of thunder move in between
