National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Helps People Safely Dispose of Medications

If you have old medications in your cabinet, Saturday is your chance to get rid of them safely.

From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., there will be nearly 100 drop boxes across the state where you can drop off your unused or expired medications.

It's happening all across the country as part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. It's an effort, in part, to combat the opioid epidemic.

According to a national survey on drug use and health, over 11 million people misused prescription pain relievers in 2017.

Experts said the best thing to do is dispose of your medication safely when you no longer need it.

The FDA recommends mixing medication with something unsavory like dirt or kitty litter and putting it in a sealed plastic bag if you're going to throw it out with your trash.

"There's people who will come in with bags of medication. They're not going to bring in one at a time," said Walgreens pharmacist Kiley Garafolo.

If you bring prescription bottles to one of the sites on Saturday, make sure you remove all of your personal information first.

Connecticut is also one of 12 states launching a pilot program to locate drug disposal sites using Google Maps.
