Professor Charged With Sex Assault

Mirvet Muca said the allegations against him are outrageous.

A 73-year-old college professor has been arrested, accused of sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 16.

Waterbury police charged Mirvet Muca, an associate professor of political science at Naugatuck Valley Community College, with sexual assault and risk of injury to a child after the alleged victim reported inappropriate contact.

Muca said the accusations are outrageous. He said the girl came to his house to see his granddaughter last week and he greeted her and gave her a hug.

He said he’s confident he will be proven innocent.

Muca’s son, Bekim, said he was home then but, in another room.

He said he believes his father is innocent and says his father’s interaction with the alleged victim led to a misunderstanding.

“I was upstairs. My daughter was also at home at the time. The neighbor came to the house, came inside briefly,” Bekim said.

The girl’s family didn’t want to appear on camera, but said they’re upset by the situation.

Muca is serving in an administrative capacity at the college  while the case is pending.

Bekim said the accusations against his father have taken a toll on his family.

“It’s destroyed me, because the one thing I can hold onto was always my father, my father’s reputation,” he said. “I’m hoping the legality process will exonerate my father.”

Mirvet Muca will be arraigned next Wednesday.
