SWAT Team Called in For Suspect Search in New Haven

A SWAT team responded to a home on Highland Street in New Haven and neighboring homes were evacuated as police searched for a shooting suspect Thursday afternoon.

Police said the incident began with a shooting in the area of Thompson and Newhall streets around 1 p.m. Initial reports were that the suspect was riding a lime-green motorcycle and shot another man in the elbow and knee. The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

A motorcycle apparently matching the description of the suspect vehicle was found parked in front of 285 Highland St. and SWAT was called in as negotiators tried to make contact with the suspect, police said. SWAT officers entered the home and searched it, but investigators did not find a suspect.

Neighboring homes were evacuated and the school district and school transportation were notified of heavy police presence during the SWAT operation. SWAT has cleared the scene.

Police now believe the bike found parked on Highland Street was likely not the suspect vehicle.

Detectives continue to investigate the shooting.

New Haven Police Chief Anthony Campbell said there was no immediate danger to the public.

"It is always a concern once a shooting has taken place we ask that anyone who may have any information to contact the police department, but right now, as far as we know, it is an isolated incident. We do not believe there is a larger threat to the community," Campbell said.

Editor's note: Police initially indicated the home was located on Winchester Avenue at Highland Street. The exact address of the home is actually 285 Highland St.
