New Haven Police Investigate 3 Weekend Shootings, Stabbing and Mugging

New Haven police are investigating three shootings, a stabbing and a mugging in the city over the weekend.

Police responding to the city's gunshot detection system around 8:15 p.m. on Sunday found a 20-year-old New Haven man and a 17-year-old boy from New Haven suffering from gunshot wounds at Dixwell Avenue and Bassett Street, in the city's Newhallville section.

The older victim was found near a bus stop with wounds to both legs. The teenager was found in the backyard of a home with a gunshot wound to his thigh. They were both taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

There have been no arrests.

Police said the two shooters fled west on Bassett Street. One was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and white and gray pants, but the gender and approximate age were not clear. The other shooter, believed to be a man, wore a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark colored pants.

A 21-year-old East Haven man was stabbed Saturday night. Police responded Yale-New Haven Hospital at 8:13 p.m. to investigate an assault and the victim said he was attacked by a man swinging a knife. He had several superficial cuts to his ear, neck and left arm and described the attacker as a thin man between 20 and 25 years old, 6-feet-tall, with short black hair and tattoos on his forearms.
A 28-year-old East Haven man was shot in the groin around 2:20 a.m. Saturday outside at Cody’s Diner, at 95 Water Street.

Police said the victim and shooter were likely arguing while waiting in line to enter the diner.

Police said a 59-year-old man was mugged and stabbed on Sunday night. They met with him around 7 p.m. on Sunday when they went to Yale–New Haven Hospital to investigate a stabbing.

The victim said a man told him to “Give me your money” and pulled a knife when the victim refuse.
The victim said he was cut on the forearm as he tried deflecting the attack and his hand was cut when he tried grabbing the knife.

The assailants stole $160.

Volpe described the black man as approximately thirty years old, 6’04” and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. His partner-in-crime is about twenty years old, 5’08” and stocky. He had long dark colored hair and wore a leather jacket.
