New Haven Schools Staff Member Arrested After Altercation With Student

NBC Connecticut

A New Haven Public Schools staff member was arrested Monday after an altercation with a student, officials said.

Officers received calls about an assault at Edgewood School on Edgewood Avenue around 2:15 p.m.

When police arrived, they said they learned a teacher, identified as 42-year-old Deron Beasley, of New Haven, and a student had been involved in an altercation in a classroom.

The student sustained minor injuries and was released to a parent, police said.

Beasley was arrested and is facing charges including risk of injury to a minor, reckless endangerment and assault. He is being held on a $15,000 bond before being released by the bail commissioner.

Beasley has been put on leave while the incident is investigated, the school district said.

"The New Haven school district takes very seriously any incident that poses physical risk to a student," the spokesperson said.

School officials said they are cooperating with authorities and New Haven Police is investigating.

Also on Monday, a hoax 911 call and multiple online threats led to lockdowns, early dismissals and police responses to several schools in New Haven.
